Tegucigalpa Medical Mission

Medical Missions

From February 16 through 23, Operation Smile conducted an international medical mission in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  My wife, Nicole, and I were able to a part of the team.

Since 1997, Operation Smile has conducted medical programs in six cities across Honduras, including San Pedro Sula, Santa Rosa de Copan, and Tegucigalpa. A year round cleft lip and cleft palate care center in Tegucigalpa offers free surgeries to patients with post-operative care and also offers continuous dental and orthodontics care, pediatrics care, speech therapy, audiology and psychology consultations. In 2014, Operation Smile held its first volunteer conference in conjunction with a surgical mission at our care center in Tegucigalpa.  I was able to give a lecture seminar to the dentists and orthodontists at the care center which was close to San Felipe Hospital.  As a team, we screened close to 300 patients, treated 155 patients with surgeries, and extracted 185 teeth.

Operation Smile’s global volunteer network includes more than 50 medical professionals and as well as hundreds of non-medical volunteers from Honduras. Over the past 18 years, Operation Smile has treated more than 3,600 patients in Honduras with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.
