November- National Diabetes Month

Nov 17 2013

November is National Diabetes Month
It has been shown to be increasingly important for patients with pre-diabetes and diabetes to maintain optimal oral health. Diabetic patients are not always aware of signs of oral problems and symptoms of gum disease. Dentists can provide them with a thorough oral evaluation, with discussion on important concepts such as:
• Bleeding, swollen gums are not “normal.”
• Oral inflammation can impact blood sugar levels.
• Periodontal disease is signified by inflammation and infection, which can both have significant negative impact on health outcomes in patients with diabetes.
• Breath that smells of acetone can be a telltale marker for blood sugar imbalance.
• Consultation between medical and dental provider may be needed prior to dental treatment.
