According to th CDC, each year 4,400 infants in the US are born with a cleft lip with or without a cleft palate and 2,700 infants are born with a cleft palate alone. Cleft lip is when the lip tissue does not join in utero. It causes an opening in the upper lip that can vary in size and can extend to the nose. Cleft palate is when the tissue of the palate does not join in utero. This causes openings in the tissue that can be present in the front or back of the palate, or both. These conditions affect eating, speech, and development. Surgical correction is required and often done during infancy.
I spend a day per month on a cleft team at Childrens Hopital helping patients and families. It is incredibly rewarding for me as a clinician professionally and personally.
