Jamaica Medical Mission

Jan 10 2020

In January, my wife, Nicole, and I went to Jamaica on a medical mission trip to help those in need.  It was a lot of work and also very rewarding.  We were with our friend and my classmate from dental school, Marja Bridges Mehr D.D.S. who is based out of Leesburg, Florida.  The Jamaica Medical Mission is an annual humanitarian mission to Port Maria, Jamaica, and surrounding communities, which has been in existence for 30 years.  In 2010 St. James Episcopal Church became the host church for the mission.

Sponsored by St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg, Florida, the group of volunteers travels to Jamaica, in the West Indies, to provide health care, free of charge, to the impoverished in Port Maria and the surrounding communities.  We strive to achieve and maintain a strong Christian relationship with our host church, St. Mary’s Anglican Church, as we fellowship and serve in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.   Stuart Mowatt is the Mission Coordinator.

Being a mission of the church, the driving force is Matthew 25:35-36:  ”for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me”…

The 30th Annual Medical Mission to St. Mary’s Parish Church, Port Maria, Jamaica, took place from January 25th to February 1st, 2020.  There were 55 volunteers on this mission trip, including many members of St. James and other residents of the Leesburg area, New York City, Maryland, North Carolina, and Minnesota.

1,301 patients were seen and treated over four active clinic days, and 1,358 prescriptions were filled for 586 patients.  The shipment to Jamaica for this mission consisted of 64 boxes containing over-the-counter medications and supplies, one auto refractometer for the eye clinic, and children’s dresses and shorts.  The clinic provided care for pediatrics, gynecology, physical therapy, optometry, internal medicine, dentistry, and an in house pharmacy.
